ERC Tri Apr16 newsletter - Spring Training Weekend

Julien Ergan contemplates the Spring Training Weekend...

If you are reading this article you have either completely missed out the best training weekend of your life or you are so sad that this weekend came to an end that you wish to revive all those unforgettable moments! Let me give you a quick glance at all the good times and fun the bunch of fifteen enraged ERC triathletes who joined forces on the weekend of the 22-24 April at Galashiels have lived.

The dream started on Friday evening when the first of us received a genuinely wonderful welcome from the staff of the Jean Muir Student Village Residences of the Heriot Watt University and when we discovered the outstanding standard of the residences! A standard that most of us never experienced as students. We knew it already, Berit and Mitchell had planned what would be a superb weekend!

We all headed up or met directly at the Galashiels swimming pool for our first training session. Andy and Alistair were very smart to prepare for us an accessible training plan to start smoothly the weekend. Everyone was really excited and despite the tiredness of the working weekend, determined to give the best of ourselves. The water was warm which was a really good thing for me! Back at the residences, we all sat in the kitchen for a first very enjoyable pizza party. A great opportunity to get to know each other’s (especially for the newbies like me), to have some good banter and get ready for the weekend’s trainings.

Waking at 7.00 the next day was not the easiest thing but was totally worth the effort as the healthy breakfast prepared for us perfectly set us up for the day. A couple of hours later, we all headed for either a 60 miles or 40 miles road bike sessions in the beautiful Borders sceneries covered with…sun! Berit and Mitchell had definitely planned everything! Chris with his terrific old school Giro outfit and James with his aerodynamic trial bike definitely created the buzz! After lunch, Alistair shared his breadth of technical running knowledge and experience with some very useful drills followed by five 200 m once again led by our weekend champion James. A really good running track session!

Vinyasa, pranayama, pa-na-va-na-ssa-ya-saa…the positions name might be daunting but Andy did a fabulous job to introduce us to the basics of yoga to help us relax our body and mind after all the efforts of the day. We all felt extremely better after the session and ready to get started with the delicious oven baked chicken pies and macaroni cheese! However, none of this prepared us for what happened next: Berit and Mitchell in their most beautiful cyclist outfits for a quiz on the best park and run performances in Scotland, the UK and worldwide! And trust me, being in the coach team does not guarantee you to win the jaffa cake medals…okay, only one team out of three had its repair kit! Amateurs or triathlete bad boys, the choice is yours! One sure thing, no one was left dehydrated!

Meeting each other on Sunday morning after a good night sleep, we followed the Kenyans flying away at the London Marathon while taking forces for the day. It was then our turn to head off to the neighbouring hills for a splendid trail run once again under the precious and marvellous Scottish sun!
Last but not least, the final endurance test took place on Sunday afternoon with the 10 km road bike time trial. Even though pretty exhausted by the energy spent since the beginning of the weekend, everyone pushed himself very hard until the very last meters of concrete separating us from the finishing line! What a great show!

Too soon it became the time to pack up, tidy up, thanks everyone for the weekend and leaving crying wishing that the weekend had gone on forever!

A genuine massive thank you to Berit and Mitchell for organising this absolutely fantastic weekend, a big thank you to Andy and Alistair for the excellent and fun training sessions and to all the exceptional staff from the Jean Muir Student Village Residences of the Heriot Watt University for their brilliant welcome and continuous attentiveness throughout this weekend and many thanks to all of you for the great team spirit, atmosphere and fun!
