May Day Madness
« on: April 24, 2009, 12:43:13 PM »
For those that haven’t already clocked it in the BC Event Calendar, Monday 4th May is the date of this year’s May Day Gallup APR.  This is always a popular event and ERC normally has a big showing at it.

http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/eve/eventsfuture.asp?evt_cp=1&evt_mode=0&evt_id=&evt_seriesid=&evt_myevents=No&RefID=&RefType=&evt_month=All&evt_kw=May+Day+Gallup&evt_regions=Scotland&evt_disc=Road+Racing&evt_class=&evt_cat=&evt_series=&evt_resultspp=20

The handicap nature of the race (see link for explanation of an APR http://www.edinburghrc.co.uk/index.php?page=126) and the benign course (one v. small climb and a motorway flyover ramp) means it’s a great event for anyone looking to give road racing a go, or whose dipped their toe and is looking for another suitable race in order to get their whole leg wet (so to speak).

You can enter on the day at the event and it would be fantastic to have a bumper turn-out of lads, lasses, old hands and newcomers alike.  Aside from anything else it’s an excuse to get out of a public holiday trip to Ikea / B&Q / Almondvale / Princes Street (delete as applicable).

For those that do decide to give it a whirl, one important piece of advice: bring a post-race piece!  Falkirk BC are (in)famous for providing not a sausage for afters.  This is now officially known as a “Falkirk Buffet” (© M. Finlay).

One other similar event to consider is ERC’s very own APR – The Edinburgh Spring Classic.

A fantastic event which is highly recommended to anyone who’d like to have a go at road racing but doesn’t know where to start.  The organiser (Colin Russell) personally guarantees the weather and the post-race refreshments are top-drawer.

Hope to see you at the start
