Time Trials in Englandshire
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:04:22 PM »
Its been 18 years since I did a time trial in Scotchland and even longer since I rode one in the land of the Big Jessies and so I would like some info on riding TTs.

Mostly because of beer, I have set myself the task of riding some time trails this year and as there are hardly any TTs compared to what it would seem now was a golden age of time trialling back in the 90's  ???, it looks like I will have to do some TTs in the North East of England neck of the woods.

So my question is if I do a CTT ride that qualifies for their BAR, will that count towards ERC's awards? Or must I do all my rides in the land of Alex Salmond?

Also I take it Scottish Cycling still have some kind of agreement with CTT to let us hairy posteriored types from North of the border to come down and ride their events.

SC have a reciprocal agreement with CTT, so you can enter CTT events without any problems. Just  use the CTT entry form (I think this used to be available on the CTT website?) rather than the SC one.

Can't answer your question about eligibility for ERC awards. I believe SC have accepted times from CTT 12 hour events for the Scottish BAR, because no Scottish 12 hour has been held for the past 4 years.

Thanks for that. One downside of being a 5 year club member is you only get a handbook once every 5 years and fer the life of me I can't find the blooming or I would read the small print myself

There's something wrong if you are not getting your ERC handbook - I am a five year member, and receive the handbook annually. Worth checking with the registrar to make sure your address and details are up to date.

From my reading of my "five year overseas member" copy of the 2012 handbook, ERC awards seem to revolve around SCU races or National (presumably Scottish) championships. Therefore going down South likely won't assist in gaining you any ERC awards but will give you the satisfaction of teaching the 'almost Scots' how's it's done....
The older I get, the faster I was! :P

Edinburgh RC awards are based on races in Scotland.

SC's calendar of National Champs is available here - http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/scotland/article/sc-20120314-scottish-cycling-news-NATIONAL-TIME-TRIALS-0

(It doesn't mention a National 12 hour - I'll check with Janette at SC to see what's happening. In the event that a Scottish event wasn't run we'd include CTT events.)

CTT entry form - http://tinyurl.com/6uzh4x7

CTT website - http://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx

I've just heard back from Jinty @ SC and we will be accepting CTT 12 hour events for our BAR:

"Nobody has come forward although there was a bit of chat in Aberdeen area .. so the answer just now is Nope ..

It’s strange but with the popularity of 12 hour mountain bike races – it seems to be a market we’re not tapping into – maybe something with some potential – I’ll have to have a think about that !!!

I should have put in a bit about 12 hours south of the borders counting .. I’ll get that sorted .. "

Thanks Jonny for all the research.

I'm doing the Mille Alba volunteers audax ride in June and then obviously volunteering for the actual ride so that takes up a big chunk of June which doesn't help of course. Hopefully I can squeeze in the National 100 on the 5th August just before my daughters wedding and won't have to resort to going to Englandshire!

Despite only setting myself the goal of riding a 25, 50 and a 100 TT it is surprising how difficult it is these days to get a couple of alternatives for anything longer than a 25TT. I remember most seasons riding 100s in Blairdrummond, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Fife, I was never very good at them so had to do as many as possible in the hope that one of em would be a "float day"  ;D Now I've got to put all my eggs in one basket and hope nothing goes wrong otherwise I will have to do it all again next year!

Does also seem amazing that with such a big club as ours and with a club member as prolific in long distance events/races as our legend that is George Berwick we don't organise a 50, 100 or even 12hr race ourselves!

Sounds like a volunteering opportunity for you...!

Running a 12 hour is a big organisational commitment, and looking at the small number of entrants in recent years, I just don't think there is enough demand to make it worth running one. 100s are probably heading the same way to some extent. I would like to see more short to mid distance non-standard TTs based on classic sporting courses, like the Tour of the Trossachs or ERC's own Tour of the Meldons. Good to see West Lothian Clarion introducing the Lang Whang TT this week.
