Tour of the Meldons MTT (Scottish Olympic TT) 2013
« on: April 14, 2013, 09:49:37 PM »
In what can only be described as 'testing' conditions (rain & a gusting SSW gale), this year's Scottish Olympic TT was contested.  It's a testament to the riders bike handling skills and well marshalled course that there were no mishaps (although there were more than a few tales of scary moments from the wind catching aero wheels).

Many thanks go to 1st time organiser Penny (Club President) Rother for a superbly organised event and of course all the other volunteers who turned out to make this the success it was.  It was also good to see a respectable number of club riders battle the elements.

Results are as follows:

Well, that was fun! The weather man was spot on and as Jonny predicted there was a turbo trainer with bike in the bus shelter when I arrived (dunno if it really was Jonny??). Even with my relatively shallow wheels there were a few wind-assisted drifts from one side of the road to the other over the Shiplaw hill but going up the Meldons hill has seldom been so much fun or fast for me (although I suspect I could have shaved a few seconds on the way down if I'd had slightly less concern for my safety!)

I had to leave before the presentations so I'd just like to say "thanks" to everyone who organised/helped yesterday - standing in the rain and wind must have been much worse than riding the bike!

It wasn't my turbo - I opted for a short warm up on the main road towards Peebles. I could possibly have done more but I think Lee can confirm that his two hour one was excessive. (I'm so glad I didn't ride down to Eddleston.)

Well ridden/survived Keith - like you I backed off on the Meldons descent. Many thanks to Pippa for guarding the big puddle at the awkward left hander.

I can confirm the "warm up" cycle out was a very silly idea, I started off warm and just got colder and colder, and the 30mins before my start were spent shivering in the hall trying to warm up!
And now I am starting to get a cold :(

Colin did well to race and finish though (he cycled out too), although he did fake a puncture to get a lift home!
Club champion 2 years in a row.

Thats free wheeling champion!

Dont mess.

Big Big thanks to Penny and her team of windswept wonders. Really well organised, run and marshalled, thanks for the encouragement.

After much deliberating the night before and a week long hacking cough I opted to ride on Sun. After drying out and the memory of the pain has now receded I'm really glad I did - it was worth it, for pushing on through the conditions, for the ride up the Meldons and the veg soup afterwards. So my often dreamt of Foinavon finish didn't come true this time, one day...

As you may have seen on Braveheart the turbo (a Cycleops Fluid 2) in the bus shelter was mine, but some git appears to have nicked it. I thought someone else was going to use it straight after me so left it in there when I rode, when I came back it was gone.

If you picked it up so some git couldn't nick it, please let me know.

Lee, I was sweating by the time I arrived in Eddleston, what did you do wrong?!  ;D

Colin missed a fantastic ride back, what fun it was to speed home without even trying!

And Vicky - I didn't take your turbo - though I did see it still there at 11.30 when I passed on my way back to the hall.

Great pictures Jan.  Awful day though.  Discretion lost out to valour for me - I should have stayed at home.  As a direct result of my decision to ride, my doctor has now ordered me to stay off the bike for the next week at least!

Vicky - your turbo was still there at c11.45 when I rode past.
