Evan crashes out and Ian Williamson gets the better of Tony Reidy

As everybody knows the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston is always colder than everywhere else on the planet. Conditions for this Thursday's racing, however, seemed even colder than usual with a cutting easterly wind blowing down the finishing straight. Round 3 of the Edinburgh RC Ingliston Crit Series Premier League Race was, nevertheless, extremely competitive with no one prepared to accept that the overall placings for the series had been decided in the first two events. With Evan Oliphant, the current series leader, crashing out with two laps to go Robert Wardell, Sandy Wallace Cycles, maintained his half minute lead on the remnants of the bunch to take a well deserved victory.

Scott Macrae was the first rider to attack in the early stages with Tony Reidy, the series leader and winner of the supporting race, suprisingly having the energy to cling to his wheel. Within three laps , however, it was all back together to line up for the first Sprint. This was predictably won by Evan Oliphant from Richard Garrett but Evan continued to persist and opened up a sizable gap. The field split under the pressure of this attack and soon a leading group of 12 riders had formed. Ken Russell of Edinburgh RC was very prominent to bring Evan back to heal. It was then Robert Wardell's turn to open up a seven second advantage with Sean Newington and Richard Garrett chasing to try and limit the damage. By now the race was into the last five laps and the chase became a little disorganised as the two leading groups came together in pursuit of the flying Wadell. Sean Newington pulled his foot out and crashed out of the race and a lap later on the chicane Evan Oliphant came down. Both riders were forced to retire. With two laps to go Robert Wardell had 14 seconds and managed to increase his lead to 28 as he crossed the finishing line. Second place deservedly went to James McCallum with Calum MacGreor again taking third place. To everyones amazement Kevin Barclay, the youth who had just taken fourth place in the first division race also managed fourth place amongst the senior riders. Not to be outdone Tony Reidy, second in the supporting race, achieved a very creditable sixth.

62 riders started the supporting race which was won by Ian Williamson - Denny RC. Despite being a puncture victim, Tony Reidy dominated this event winning the first sprint lap and coming second in the final one. Kevin Barclay was also very prominent and this pair seemed to take it in turns to put the large field under pressure. The race very quickly disintegrated into dozens of small bunches and only eighteen riders were left to contest the finish. Tony Reidy was edged out in the final sprint by Ian Williamson of the Denny RC with Bruce Wallace, Hawick CC coming third.
