Oliphant on another planet at Ingliston # 4

Last year's premier series winner Evan Oliphant (Recycling) showed the wings of Mercury and new-found confidence in stamping his undoubted authority on the field in the latest round of the Cycling Scotland Ingliston Criterium Series. His famous sprint was not required on this occasion as he put in a blistering attack after half distance to which no-one could respond, putting 30 seconds into the bunch in 2 laps and relentlessly increased his lead to win by almost a minute.

The organisers got things moving early by calling an early sprint prime which was won by Kevin Barclay (Kingdom RT) from Graham McGarrity and split the field into 3 groups. All the big-hitters were in the first group from which Stuart MacGregor (C21 Multisports) and Gary Macrae (Pedal Power) got off the front with Lee Whitelaw (Edinburgh RC) chasing and Oliphant looking comfortable leading the bunch. Whitelaw failed to make the junction and was caught but the two leaders persisted for a couple of laps with a slender lead reined back by Oliphant who was happy to tow the bunch such was his confidence. Under this pressure the leaders sat up making a 10 strong leading group.

Stuart MacGregor was also looking strong and he put in a strong attack at the start of the lap for the second sprint which he took by 6 seconds from the bunch led by McGarrity. As he continued Oliphant and Kevin Barclay took off in pursuit and as the junction was made Oliphant had the strength to attack again.  Within 2 laps he was over 30 seconds up on the chasing group with Paul McInally (Pedal Power) in between trying to cross. Ross Crook (Edinburgh RC) was also trying to get clear but he was less successful than McInally who stayed away for 3 laps on his own before he was joined by Calum MacGregor (Bicycleworks.com). They chased for 4 laps but could make no inroads on the flying Oliphant or the bunch.

With 6 laps to go they were caught and Oliphant was over 50seconds clear. His lead went up to 80 seconds before the Stuart MacGregor launched an attack just before the final lap. He got a 5-second gap as he came through the finish line and just managed to hold off the chasing group led home by Kevin Barclay.
