Cycling Scotland Ingliston Criterium Series 2006 Final Round

The 8th Ingliston Criterium Series came to a close after the final round on 25th May. We are grateful to Cycling Scotland for their financial support for the series without which it would not take place. We also thank our many other sponsors of the prize list either through goods or vouchers. A huge thank you is also due to Jammie Johnston for his enthusiastic commentary and to Bill Dunscombe from Kirkcaldy for his unflappable operation of the photo finish camera. Also thanks to the  SC commissaries without whom the races could not take place. We are also grateful to Colin Renton for his excellent timeous reports and results on the SC website and in the national press.

This was another highly successful series, with large fields drawn from the length and breadth of Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands. Most travelled entrants were probably Michael Van der Vlies and his son Alistair from Forres. Our thanks to them and all other riders for supporting the series. 25 riders scored points in the Premier League and 32 in the First Division giving an indication of the high level of competition.

We do our best to run a professional and efficient race series but of course things do not always go to plan. Though the hire of the circuit costs us well over £1000 we do not always hear about work on the circuit or the presence of other users until the organising team arrives at 4.30. This has led to some disruption for which we apologise. We always welcome comments on the running of the series either at Ingliston or via our website.

On the racing front, the final round was won by Chris Smart(Glasgow Couriers) from Ken Russell (Edinburgh RC/The Bicycleworks) culminating in a series win for Gary Hand (Agisko Dart/ who has been showing strongly in the Premier Calendar this year. Russell took second in the series with Scottish Junior international Kevin Barclay (Merlin Development Squad) capturing third and the King of the Sprints title.

The First Division race was won by Colin Fergus (Edinburgh RC/The Bicycleworks) with team mate Cameron Wood safe in third to secure the promoting club’s 4th win in the series in the last 5 years. He also took the King of the Sprints title. Consistent riding gave Ryan Morris (Hawick CC) the youth title. In addition impressive performances were displayed by youths Hamish Creber (Sandy Wallace) and Kieron McMahon (Edinburgh Racers) who both featured in the overall table top ten along with Junior series winner Jamie McQueen. The women’s fields were somewhat disappointing, with Commonwealth Games off-road competitor Ruth McGavigan (X-c taking the series.
