Sunday run changes

A new meeting place and start-time have been announced for the club Sunday run

From Sunday 21 March, the ERC Sunday run will leave from the Gilmerton crossroads at the earlier time of 9.20 am (rather than from Fairmilehead at 10 am).  The 9.20 time will apply throughout the summer months, while during the winter it will move to the slightly later time of 9.40 am.

The new venue for meeting is the junction of the B701 (Newtoft Street, Ferniehill Drive) and A772 (Gilmerton Road, Drum Street).  There is a sign saying "Gilmerton" at the East side of the junction with bench seats behind it - that is where we will meet.

As at present, the start time is the time the run will leave - so please aim to arrive at least 5 minutes ahead of that time.

The Sunday run will continue to be a mid-paced general training/recovery ride.  It aims to cater for riders of a range of abilities, both sexes and all ages.  Distances are typically 45-60 miles in the winter, 55-70 in the summer, although shorter options are available.  Average speed (excluding stops) is usually 16-17 mph, although the pace is varied to suit the preferences and abilities of those who turn up on the day.  The run always waits for punctures etc., and although there may be the occasional sprint for a 30-sign, the emphasis is more on cooperative group riding than on competition.  The run also aims for maximum variety in route, with runs going East, South or West from Edinburgh, sometimes hilly, sometimes flat, and usually with most of the distance covered on minor roads.  There is often a cafe stop option for those who want it.  The aim is to get home by lunchtime (1.30 or thereabouts).

Advance information about each Sunday run is posted on the Message Board, usually on Friday or on Saturday morning.

Numbers taking part have been quite low over the past year or so, but it is hoped that the earlier start time will encourage more riders to take part.  If more people turn out, it may be possible to divide into two groups (e.g. one faster, one slower, or one longer, one shorter).

If you have comments or questions about the Sunday run, please contact me direct (my details are in the Club handbook).  Volunteers to help lead the ride would also be welcome.

Andrew Mylne (Sunday run ride leader)
